If you’re at all eager in Daniel Lanois, then clearly you must occupy this DVD. The filmmaking may not blow your mind, but the amazing musicianship and the gentle and thoughtful spirit of the artist likely will. My approved allotment, oddly enough, are the special features, where it’s REALLY about the music, and specifically about Brian Blade, who’s a giant among artists. I literally raved about how powerful I enjoyed Allotment I and how “CODE GEASS: Lelouch of the Rebellion” is honest an fantastic series and one of the best to advance from Japan in awhile.

And so far, the popularity has led to another series, the first anime album to arrive #1 on the Oricon music album charts and many of the drama series breaking into the Oricon album charts top 10.

The series is objective well written, the CLAMP-based characters are impartial frigid and the mecha and art designs are objective fabulous to peek at.

Vol. 3 consists of episodes 10-13 and Vol. 4 consists of episodes 14-17. The storyline primarily focuses on the introduction of MAO, who has a Geass of reading people’s thoughts and of course, more revelations on Suzaku and how it will impact his relationship with Lelouch.

VIDEO & AUDIO:

“CODE OF GEASS: Lelouch of the Rebellion” is featured 1:78:1 Anamorphic Widescreen. The animation and video quality is smart and digitally unusual since it is a newer anime television release. What I savor about the video quality is the sheer amount of people enthusiastic. Everyone with detail, buildings, mecha and the destruction has detail. The character designs based from CLAMP’s character make concepts are objective recent and frosty to ogle at. One of the coolest looking character designs in an anime mecha series without being a full-on mecha series. Very cold!

As expected from a unusual anime series, video quality was impartial stout. From the character animation to the backgrounds, everything was luminous and vibrant. And because this series features so many scenes throughout Japan, this series really featured so considerable background art and characters. Everything looked awesome! Again, I’m very impressed with how noteworthy went in creating a single episode.

As for the audio, the audio is English and Japanese stereo. For a television series, I was sort of expecting stereo sound but vivid some television series including Dolby Digital 5.1 on the DVD soundtracks, I was hoping that there may have been a Dolby Digital 5.1 track for Code Geass but the audio is stereo. Dialogue is determined and you can understand what the characters are saying. Both the English and Japanese snort acting are well done.

JUDGMENT CALL:

I really enjoyed this latest Share II of “CODE GEASS: Lelouch of the Rebellion”. Enjoying the strategy, the wit, the action sequences and how everything plays out, is honest amazing.

With Fraction II, you can convey how the series is setting things up between Lelouche versus Suzaku. Both are best friends, having grown up with each other but when Lelouche finds out that Suzaku is a thorn in his side, you unbiased wonder how far Lelouche will go to slay Britannia.

What’s more homely is to search for him go through the doldrums of intelligent he killed Shirley’s father but sacrifices are needed. But more unpleasant what he had to do to Shirley in order to ensure that his identity as Zero is not blown.

Both volumes were unprejudiced as action-packed, spellbinding and addictive as the previous two volumes. And there were a lot of revealing moments for Suzaku and C.C.’s characters. So, suffice to say, these two volumes are quite indispensable as it’s definitely setting things up for probably more explosive and action-packed episodes.

With everything so distinct, the only negative, and it’s really not a negative but more or less I enjoying hearing the action all around me via Dolby Digital 5.1 (especially in DTS-HD or Dolby TrueHD ala Blu-ray) is that I wished that audio was presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 but serene dialogue is quite definite and easy to understand in stereo and the music as well. But I really hope this series gets the Blu-ray treatment soon.

“CODE GEASS: Lelouch of the Rebellion” is a fabulous anime series that doesn’t reach along too frequently in Japan. Attractive character designs, art direction, sing acting, mecha designs and a improbable region, this anime is definitely special and worth watching.

Like Portion I, everything about Fraction II of “CODE GEASS: Lelouch of the Rebellion” so far has been noble and I can’t wait for Fraction III. I highly recommend this DVD status!

Code Geass is the best anime I’ve seen to date. It has a bit of everything: mecha, strategy, romance, politics, comedy. The characters are lively and inspiring, and the English dubbing is stunning pleasurable. Curve balls reach out of left field at any moment making you desperate to search for the next episode. My jaw hit the floor more often in this series than all the other anime I’ve seen combined. Can’t recommend this series strongly enough. WARNING: don’t search for info on the indicate online as you’ll probably come by Ample SPOILERS!!

Yeeup! As Mr. Tersander would say. This is one of my current films. While not exactly bust-a-gut laughable, it is warmly laughable throughout with a couple of classic lines & scenes (the perplexing storeroom, the “letch”, the well, the all-night Wam session etc.), played to perfection with ease and charm (my God those are lost arts, aren’t they? ) by a cast of pros who are immediately likeable and comfortable to be around.

If you enjoyed the first few James Bond films with Sean Connery (before the franchise turned into a campy parody of itself), then you’ll like this one. Although it’s not based on any of Ian Fleming’s new stories, it captures their feel better than anything since _From Russia With Love_.

Timothy Dalton’s steely Bond is arguably the closest to date to Fleming’s recent vision for the MI6 secret agent (not ’spy’, please) . He’s as tough and lean as Connery ever was, and he brings something of Connery’s lupine charm to the role.

The rest of the movie is extremely well done. Robert Davi is one of the best villains since Goldfinger, and surely one of the most realistic in the entire series. Carey Lowell, though mostly effective, is a itsy-bitsy underwhelming in the acting department. And the region — lifted at least partly from Fleming’s _Live and Let Die_ (which is the source for the abominable thing that happens to Felix Leiter early in the film) — gives Dalton’s Bond an excuse to seethe with volcanic fury and go off seeking vengeance.

If I’m not erroneous (and I don’t assume I am), this is also the last script to which longtime Bond screenwriter Richard Maibaum contributed. (He died not long after this film was produced.)

I like Pierce Brosnan in the role, and I’d like him better if he got better movies to do; _Goldeneye_ has probably been his best so far. But for some reason, the screenwriters don’t want to construct him gritty enough. (And by the time they tried with Roger Moore — in the marvelous _For Your Eyes Only_ — it was far too tedious.)

I also like _The Living Daylights_. But when I want to examine a non-Connery Bond film, this is the one I capture most often.

Probably all Bond fans out there have already seen it. But if you haven’t, you’ve got a treat ahead of you.

“License To Demolish” is one of the most controversial films in the Bond catalog. For many, it is too violent (in a realistic design, without the comedic or fantasy elements), and does not feature a “Bondian” villian or location. For others, however it is a return to the classic Fleming style, as seen in “From Russia With Appreciate,” and “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.” Of all the actors that have played James Bond, Timothy Dalton provided the most upright interpretation of Ian Fleming’s character. That may be a different character than the one that Sean Connery played, and certainly quite different than the one Roger Moore played, but Dalton’s performance as Bond in “License To Extinguish,” and “The Living Daylights,” is the truest to Fleming’s novels. The Special Edition DVD of “License To Raze” is quite special indeed. A magnificent widescreen portray, crystal obvious sound, and a plethora of special features (like the other Bond special editions) including theatrical trailers and documentaries on the making of the movie design it a must have. The film itself also boasts some of the most piquant action sequences and best character development (what a unusual thought!) in all of the Bond films, and features some crackling dialog. If you’re an action movie junkie, or like an spellbinding thriller this one is for you.

There’s a fleeting but telling moment in Stephen Frears’ “Chéri” when the aging Lea de Lonval (Michelle Pfeiffer) stands on the balcony of her hotel suite, staring down at a remarkable younger man lifting weights on the beach. Their eyes lock for a moment, and the young man turns ever so slightly to give her a better recognize at his biceps. It’s not as if she couldn’t have this man; she is, after all, a fabulously rich courtesan, one of the most successful to emerge from the La Belle Epoque era at the turn of the last century. Unfortunately, the man she gazes upon is nothing more than reminders of what she no longer has, one being her young lover, the other being youth itself. She must now go through the process of letting go and fascinating on, a feat that proves to be powerful easier said than done.

The narrative of “Chéri” is indeed a tragedy, but Frears and screenwriter Christopher Hampton (who adapted the fresh new by Colette) clearly had no desire to get the audience shout. Rather, they wanted to be lifeless and to the point, realistic instead of sentimental–they wanted the audience to ruminate on what’s possible given the site. While this is certainly one of the film’s greatest strengths, most of the success is due to the performances, which are dramatically charming yet believable at the same time. Pfeiffer is especially unbelievable as Lea, a woman with who clearly has feelings yet has made a career out of repressing them. It’s not in a courtesan’s best interest to vow her mind or topple in savor, but as we all know, emotion can often times win the better of us when we’re distracted.

The story: Lea is beseeched by her equally rich friend/rival, a weak courtesan named Charlotte Peloux (Kathy Bates), to persuade her son, Fred, who Lea has known since he was a child and has nicknamed Chéri (Rupert Friend) . At age nineteen, Charlotte feels that Fred is musty enough to marry and have grandchildren, which is really what this is all about. Unfortunately, Fred is spiteful and mopish, not at all feeble enough to be a husband or father. Charlotte wants Lea to construct a man out of her son. What was intended to be a few weeks of conditioning ended up becoming six years of decadent passion, Lea the provider of mountainous rooms and lavish gifts, Fred the self-indulgent boy who happily takes what she freely offers. Freud would have a field day with this one, seeing as Lea and Fred essentially section a mother/son relationship augmented by sex.

When Fred returns to his right mother, he learns that she has arranged a marriage for him–to Edmee (Felicity Jones), the eighteen-year-old daughter of Marie Laurie (Iben Hjejle), another courtesan. Only then do Fred and Lea realize that their casual relationship has grown into care for. Partly as a design to cope with her feelings and partly as a contrivance to develop Fred jealous, Lea secretly goes on a retreat to a seaside hotel, telling not a soul where she is or for how long she will be there. During this time, she continues to get advances on rich and impressionable young men. Likewise, Fred continues to be his glum self, initially showing no right interest in his novel wife. There does arrive a moment, however, when he realizes that he and Edmee have more in accepted than he first thought; both were raised by mothers who had no true interest in them except at such moments when it superb them best. In essence, they’re orphans.

The tragedy of this epic comes from the knowledge that Lea and Fred were destined to drop in esteem yet born too far apart. The film handles this not with weepy melodrama but with a murky, reserved dignity, the kind that comes from adherence to strict professional guidelines. Courtesans in particular have it hard, financially well off but socially shunned. The only outlets they seem to have are other courtesans, who rely on the same mindless topics for every conversation. Long term relationships are certainly out of the question; it’s not about falling in cherish, but supporting yourself. Lea, desperately clinging to the notion of recapturing her youth with Fred, conveniently ignores this cardinal rule. One wonders if she knew all along how disastrous it is to play games in matters of the heart.

A mountainous share of the reason this movie works so well is because of Michelle Pfeiffer, who gives Lea such amazing charm and poise, her breathy, exaggerated remark the very embodiment of beauty, pleasure, and extravagance, all available for a impress. But all the actors are very well cast. Kathy Bates is priceless as the overbearing Madame Peloux, and Rupert Friend brings big arrogance and immaturity to the title character. “Chéri” is also a triumph of visual appeal, production designer Alan MacDonald, cinematographer Darius Khondji, and costume designer Consolata Boyle convincingly evoking the contemplate and feel of early twentieth century Paris. The entire film is a sensual experience that envelopes the audience, a somber but pleasing excursion into a world of carefree opulence, hidden feelings, and insecure romances. It’s practically a tragedy waiting to happen.

A rapture of visual, audio and cinematic emotional brilliance all tied with a killer last line. What a wonder is space before the viewer when one enters the world of “Cheri”.

The visual richness of this parfait of the Belle Epoch is breathtaking from the rich creamy art neuveau architecture to the gloriously realized costumes of the early 20th century. What they only indicated in “Sizable” of the same period costumes. Explodes in luxury and in a sense informs the recognize to the scene at hand and seems less costume than authentic clothing.

As Cinema “Cheri” succeeds as more than an adaptation of a Collette new but becomes a world unto it’s have. Here we are presented with some of our finest female performers at the top of their game. In short I am speaking of Michelle Pfeiffer and Kathy Bates. As traditional courtesan rivals who are now aging friends they approach together to account for the last section of their lives and the beginning of Bates’ son’s life in a grand intention.

Kathy Bates goes deep into the complexities of her mix of comedy and nuanced drama in the same intention she did with Annie Wilkes. Not to say that the characters of Annie and Madame Peloux are anything alike. But Miss Bates takes this role to a marvelous level while all the while not letting you notice her do her magic. She is impartial THERE! The scene where her face decays from a radioactively sunny laugh to affirm her just deepest disgust her improper soul is priceless.

Then there is Michelle Pfeiffer as Lea de Lonval, at fifty one she may be older that the literary Lea but she has never been more intelligent or nearly goddess like. To peruse at her is to gawk upon a woman of a sure age that is ageless in her embrace of times changing hands upon her face. But there is more. This may be the pinnacle of her career, the role of her lifetime. She is Lea in so many levels both within her acting and in a sense as an actress. She is exquisite and brings forth the soul of a large character as only our finest actors can.

But all of this would seem a delicious trifle, a light narrative of an aging courtesan and her young lover if it were not for the narration that gives the film added depth and gravitas. I asked a friend today what he idea of the final outcome of the yarn. Of what the narrator reveals of what became of Cheri. He tossed it off lightly and said that it seemed an after belief. He could not have been more unfavorable. He missed the whole point of the film. The last lines of the film that convey us of the ultimate fate of Lea and Cheri are what give this film an emotional strength, irony, and ultimately heart wrenching tragedy. It is the final twist situation into a handsome jewel of a film that is as challenging and gripping as Lea’s mysterious emerald ring.

4.5 Stars… Be warned, the character Simon Baker plays in this series is edgier than his character in The Mentalist and slightly more abrasive. However, that being said the first season of this good drama was the strongest. At the time, Baker was billed as a recent face with edge from Austrailia and the series got reliable important reviews its first year. Baker’s seens with Dabney Coleman were fantastic to perceive as he struggled between goodwill honest work and the call of “the rich firm” accelerate by his father. Alan Rosenberg was estimable though the character he played was less rich than his characters in other series (Cybil, L.A. Law, Civil Wars) . If you like Simon Baker in The Mentalist, and you don’t put a question to him to always play the same steady character, you’ll probably like this first season and if like true shows this series will also be appetizing. So what happened in the remaining seasons? They retooled the premise to broaden their viewing audience and it watered down the reveal but this first season is definitely worth watching. I’d also recommend catching the actor in the romantic dramedy: Something Modern, if you are a fan of his.

If you missed this series when it ran in the early to mid-2000’s you may well regain your current dramatic series is no longer on television or cable, but in this box site (and hopefully two forthcoming entries) .

“The Guardian” is not a “Kill She Wrote”-type series where there’s a smoking gun and a criminal on the loose every episode. Instead, the series is driven by Simon Baker’s character who is many things–a lawyer by choice, a children’s court appointed adovocate by sentence, an estranged son, and most of all a complex person with problems who has the tightest lips in the galaxy when it comes to voicing his beget frustrations and concerns.

As the episodes–and series–unfolds the viewer wonders how long Fallon (Baker’s character) can sustain it up. He’s heading for a breakdown and the suspense keeps one on the edge of his or her seat. Questions also arise: how did Chop Fallon regain this method? Why do he and his father work together, but don’t seem to acquire along personally? Is Fallon collected abusing drugs?

No seriously this is a captivating film where a man tries to capture Monica, and convince her to leave her life as a parisan escort and descend in fancy with him. Critique: `How Grand Do You Admire Me’ is a rather weird but luscious combination of erotica, romance and shadowy comedy rolled into one. While the viewer may gain it difficult to determine exactly what genre the film is best first-rate for when all is said and done I would seek information from that they enjoyed watching. Monica Bellucci does what she does best as she subtly moves assist and forth from sulky and smoldering to volcanic eruption. Bernard Campan also delivers a strong performance and there’s also a dinky but memorable role played by one of France’s finest actors, Gerard Depardieu.

The progress of the battle is told through the recollections of surviving veterans from both sides, as well as poignant letters home from those who perished. Alongside the better known footage from the German archives, there are rarer clips from the Russian vaults, of life in the city before, during and after the battle, and propaganda films of German POWs in Soviet concentration camps. From the NKVD (KGB/FSB) archives, we learn how, contrary to long current historical accounts, Field Marshall Paulus’ surrender did not bring the battle to a finish – over 10,000 German troops chose to fight on amidst the rubble, holding out against helpful Soviet forces for another 2 months before finally being defeated. In all, over a quarter-million German soldiers (the considerable 6th Army) died at Stalingrad. The Russians suffered over half a million casualties.

The documentary is far from exhaustive. Only cursory mention is made of the Romanian, Hungarian, and Italian Armies (over half a million men) that took fragment in the assault and perished alongside the Germans. But on the whole, it is a balanced, captivating and admirable epic of a battle that has for too long, remained untold in the west. Its value lies not so powerful in the battle-footage unearthed but more in preserving the first-hand testimony of the last remaining survivors of this decisive moment in history.

My only criticism is of the irritating English dubbing of every spoken word in the documentary. This was originally shown in German and Russian with all the interviews conducted in those languages. It’s pretty to dub the main narration but dubbing over the veterans’ and survivors’ accounts was overkill and highly annoying. As the previous reviewer said, it was to appease the “subtitle-averse” crowd. Personally I notion the producer should have given his audience more credit. Many of the veterans interviewed were emotionally distraught as they recounted the trauma. Having American voice-actors trying to seize their afflict with faked emotion made the whole expend silly. For me, the height of absurdity was when Hitler and Goebbels had their speeches dubbed over by some American voice-actor. Optional English subtitles should have been the scheme to go.

The documentary was shot in 1.78:1 widescreen and is presented as such on this DVD (Anamorphic) . The fresh footage, including the interviews, shots of the present-day city and the graphics musty, all ogle helpful, with arresting images and strong, natural colours. The archive footage is understandably poorer in quality, unrestored and from the Russian side, significantly grainy. Sound is in Dolby 2.0. There are no subtitles. Extras include a 10-minute long interview with Prof. Guido Knopp who wrote and co-produced the documentary, 20 minutes worth of additional interviews with veterans (both in German with optional English subtitles) and a 5-minute modern-day tour of a pristine, snow-clad Volgograd (City on the Volga – the recent name for Stalingrad) .

A solid documentary with provocative unique footage and invaluable testimony from participants in the battle and related events is ruined by loud voice-overs by bad actors. Both the narration and the voice-overs of interviewees are mediocre at best. If you are averse to dubbing of fictional films, you will understand that overdubbing of non-fictional work is particularly onerous. Clearly a decision was made to do a version that would be accessible to those averse to reading subtitles. But in the age of DVD it is fairly absurd not to include the recent version of the film.

Toy Soldiers is one of my all time accepted movies. I have quite possibly seen this movie about 100 times.. Anytime it comes on TV i seek it, I acquire it on VHS, I saw three times in the theatre. Now I can finally bear it on DVD.

The movie takes location in a Prep School for misfit boys. Sean Astin leads a motley crew of abominable boys who try to do their school and their friends from a group of Columbian terrorists. He is joined by Will Wheaton and Keith Coogan as two of his friends and Louis Gossett Jr. as the schools headmaster. Astin and his friends advance up with a masterful thought to manufacture a landscape of diversions to allow Billy (Astin) to speed the grounds impartial long enough to bellow schematics of the guns, drawing of the terrorists and where they are placed. He must then design it serve in time for roll call or his classmates will be killed. This sets in motion a series of events that gets one boy killed and sneds the rest of the group into warp hasten to kick some terrorist a**. This movie was awesome. Spacious action and excellent suspense.. I am ecstatic that I can finally fetch it on DVD.

Just FYI, the movie format is listed as both widescreen and fullscreen/pan and scan, making it seem that this contains both versions. It is infact fullscreen only and has a lack of any additional bonus features. Calm a enormous flick, but if you’re looking for the niceities, you might want to wait for better version to be released.

Technically, there’s already been an anime series — “Negima” — about preteen wizard/schoolteacher Negi Springfield.

But apparently that isn’t stopping them from creating another parallel series, rebooting and revamping Ken Akamatsu’s bestselling manga into the visually lush, fantastical “Negima!?” (see, the question and exclaimation mark mean it’s a different show!). And this series is a vastly different creation — while it’s rarely faithful to the original manga’s storylines, it’s still a solid fantasy story sprinkled with some fun comic relief. And chupacabras.

Negi has been assigned to a vast all-girls Mahora Academy in Japan — but things start going wrong before he even starts. Half-asleep student Asuna witnesses a small magical display, and a vampire is attacking students. A vampire who is also his student.

Even worse, the vampire Evangeline and her robotic partner Chachamaru are targeting Negi, since the boy is her only ticket out of a curse that binds her to Mahora. Even worse, her suppressed superpowers come back at the full moon — and soon Negi’s only hope of defeating Evangeline is by forming a Pactio (a magical contract). Asuna is the logical choice since she already knows about his magic, but will the stubborn girl agree before Evangeline’s icy magic smashes Mahora?

But there’s more trouble when a pair of disguised wizards bring news — the legendary Star Crystal has been stolen, and it may be related to odd happenings at Mahora. As Negi tries to avoid erminehood, he must deal with a kindly resident ghost, the dangerous Library Island, camping trips with his Pactio partners, and an evil fairy that is attacking the school — and even transports them to another dimension. Can Negi keep his class safe from whatever has stolen the Star Crystal — and avoid being turned into an animal?

For the record, “Negima!?” isn’t very faithful to Ken Akamatsu’s original manga — the first few episodes loosely follow one of his storylines, before spinning off in a totally different direction with the whole Star Crystal storyline. And rather than use the comedy and romantic woes, the first thirteen episodes choose to focus on all the magic that can be crammed into thirteen episodes — transformations, spells, enslavement, vampires, aerial battles and chupacabras. Well, sort of.

Fortunately “Negima!?” never feels overstuffed, even though there’s plenty going on here on many levels (personal, magical, and Pactiowise). The various subplots mesh together very smoothly right up to the cliffhanger, and the writers patch in stretches of quiet time where the characters talk, plot and occasionally go to class. And of course, we get some spectacular magical battles and creepy magical creatures, with one highlight being the flashback of Negi’s father battling Evangeline in a ruined city.

And though the focus is on magic and action, there’s still plenty of comic relief — chupacabra clubs, meatball-shapoed spies, goofy Pactio transformations, and a hilarious scene where Negi tries fruitlessly to erase Asuna’s memory. His life becomes entertainingly chaotic as more and more girls learn of his magic powers, and he’s forced to make more and more Pactios.

Even if “Negima!?” had a really rotten storyline, it would be worth watching for the simply stunning animation. The entire series is soaked in dark jewel tones and swirling magical spells, with erupting jungles of ice and hedgey mazes where evil creatures lurk. Mahora is a shadowy, vaguely gothic place with lots of dim streets and a city filled with starlike lights. And the level of detail can be breathtaking — while casting one elaborate spell, Asuna can be seen clearly reflected in Negi’s glasses.

Negi proves to be a likable little hero — earnest, courageous, unselfish and a bit tightly wound, while Asuna proves to be stubborn, brash, eccentric and almost superhumanly strong. And though there’s a vast cast, they all get a measure of fleshing out — Konoka and her hard-nosed bodyguard Setsuna, serene ninja Kaede, bookish Nodoka, and even a ghostly student who’s still hanging around. The best is undoubtedly Evangeline — especially since the writers pause to reveal what a tragic, lonely life she has.

“Negima!?” is a stunningly animated revamp Negi Springfield’s adventures — and while not terribly faithful to the manga, these dark-edged magical adventures are definitely worth watching.

First of all, I love the Negima manga series. The U.S. release is now up to volume 20 and it has been a fantastic ride the whole way through. The first anime series was ok. For the most part it followed the stories laid out in the first few volumes of the manga pretty accurately. Then for the final few episodes they created original material to wrap up the series. Overall, it was fun to see a great manga series in animated form with voices and music, but they really only scratched the surface.

This second Negima anime series starts over and pretty much tells its own story. Some might complain because they want to see the Manga better represented, but I see no need for this. I can enjoy the anime series as an alternate storyline, and this one is just all around fun. The animation is fantastic and the characters are well represented. Since it’s a new story I get the same sense of wondering what will happen next that I do when reading the manga.

One bit of advice. Going into this series it would help to be familiar either with the manga or the first anime, because this series spends a lot less time explaining things. I would probably be confused if I had just jumped into this series without my previous knowledge of the Negima universe. The creators really seem to assume the viewer already knows thw who’s and the what’s of it all. So it’s not truly a sequel because it starts over, but it’s not completely independent from previous versions either.

I look forward to the next DVD release continuing this series, as well as the hopeful eventual release of the live action Negima series.
